Cape Pergola and Patio

This project brought me down to the Florida for the second time after a referral from another happy Florida couple. We designed this one thinking about the sun and the storms, both of which these homeowners were sure to encounter. We designed the ceiling with overhead shade using 2 sets diagonal joists opposing each other, this way we avoided ugly cross bracing required in Hurricane regions. The way the angled joists and cedar slats intersect creates the perfect amount of shade. In addition to the pergola we designed the modern slab patio, framed the form and worked with a local team to place the concrete. After heading back home the region was struck by a strong hurricane, there was lots of damage in the area, but the homeowners informed us their pergola was unscathed, apart from a slat or two.
