Cape Pergola and Patio

My second trip to Florida for a large project, we designed this one thinking about the sun and the storms, both of which these homeowners were sure to encounter. We designed the roof overhead shade using 2 sets diagonal joists that oppose each other, this way we avoided ugly cross bracing required in Hurricane regions. The way the angled joists and cedar slats that clad their underside intersect creates the perfect amount of shade. In addition to the pergola we designed the modern slab patio and worked with a local team to place it. After we left the region did get hit by a strong hurricane, there was lots of damage in the area, but the homeowners informed us thier pergola was unscathed, apart from a slat or two.
